Amber has a hardness of 2-3 on the Mohs scale, which means that it is not a very hard stone and can be easily scratched.  It is a very light stone and is only slightly heavier than water.  If there are air bubbles in the amber it may actually float in water.  In fact, floating along rivers and being pushed by tides is one of the main ways in which amber is transported from its original location throughout its incredibly long life.

Amber is most commonly found in the Baltic region, although large amber deposits have been found in the Dominican Republic, Burma (Myanmar), Borneo, Mexico, Siberia, Lebanon and China.  Baltic amber is usually lemon-yellow or orange and ranges from being very clear to very cloudy.  In the clear amber, you can usually see trapped insects and tiny hairs that may have come from the male flowers of oak trees in that region.  Very rarely, it is possible to see a larger animal, such as a centipede or a snail trapped and preserved in amber.  In contrast, Burmese amber and amber from Borneo is usually dark red and sometimes almost black in color.  Because of its darker color it is more difficult to see inclusions, such as insects and plants.

The most common use for amber is in jewellery.  It is a perfect stone for jewellery-making because it is light, warm to the touch, easy to carve and beautiful to look at.  In addition to amber jewellery, however, for centuries artisans have been carving amber into everything from chess pieces, tobacco pipe stems, bowls, snuff boxes and candlestick holders.  The most remarkable use for amber was in the construction of the Amber Room at the Old Winter Palace in St Petersburg, Russia in 1717.

Amber jewellery is beautiful to look at and a pleasure to wear due to its warmth and light weight.  It is often set in yellow gold in order to highlight its beautiful colour, but is also very commonly found set in silver.  Large and small amber stones look fantastic when set into rings, brooches, pendants and bracelets or when polished into round beads and made into a necklace.
